Something About Me
My name is Elyse Corridoni. I have always loved sports. I grew up with baseball as my favorite sport and is still one of my favorites to this day. I religiously watched the Cleveland Indians, from my hometown, every summer for years. I have tried to play volleyball and basketball throughout my youth, but unfortunately I was never talented enough to get playing time. I am also an extremely competitive person; therefore, as someone who never got to play sports I watch with enthusiasm and attended school games whenever I could. I have also loved swimming and I danced through my recreation center since I was 5 years old. My freshman year of high school I was cut from the swim team, but instead of letting me walk away, the coach offered me a position of student manager. From that point on, I was able to do both of the things I loved: I would do Dance Group through my high school right after school then head to swim practice and help the coach time. watch as he critiqued the swimmers, and go travel to meets. I did that all four years of high school and I absolutely loved it, but of course I still found time to go to volleyball and basketball games when I could during the school year.
When I decided on Tiffin University I realized that there was no swim team, but I realized that I loved the aspect of sports as a profession so before my freshman year I e-mailed the volleyball, basketball, and baseball/softball coaches to see if anyone would need help throughout the year so I could stay involved with sports in college. I was a little discouraged at first, but then I got an e-mail from the men's basketball coach saying that they would need a little help this season. When I came into the office I did not anticipate that I would be filming games, since I tend to get angry and scream (my competitive nature), but I figured that it will be a good connection. After filming the first men's game, the women's assistant coach asked if I would do the same for them and I have been filming all of the home basketball games for the past 3 years. The coaches and players are such great people; it has just been a blessing to work with them even in a small way.
As my time at Tiffin University is coming closer and closer to ending, even though I am only a Junior, I am constantly thinking about what aspect of sports and what sport I may want to get involved with after I graduate. This is when I heard that TU was getting a Swimming & Diving team. I realized that this will be perfect for me; I know swimming and I know how to help coaches with whatever they need. I am unbelievably involved on campus so I can also help the new coach get associated with the school and teach her things that she may need to know. I e-mailed the Athletic Director, Lonny Allen, as well as my advisor and they both said interning with the swim coach would be a great internship for me.
I plan to help Rita Kalmikova (the swim coach) with whatever she needs right now as her right-hand man. With the short amount of time that I have spent with her, I can already tell that I am going to have a lot of fun, learn more than I thought I would about recruiting and the planning of sports, and gain a ton of experience that will be helpful to me in the future. Plus who else will get to say that they helped to established Swimming & Diving at Tiffin University? :)
As of right now, I hope to go to work with Rita my senior year for the first year of the swim season. After that, I plan to attend graduate school and get my masters in Sports Management at Tiffin University hopefully as a Greaduate Assistant for Rita. For the future, I plan to go into Gameday Operations. I love the planning and organizing that goes into putting on a great sporting event and then watching your team kick some butt!
